Description: A bush or small tree of mangroves, twigs cylindrical, with prominent upwardly growing pneumatophores emerging from the system of cable roots. Leaves 3-1- cm long; petiole very short. Flowers large; calyx narrowly 6- or more parted, over 2 cm long, inside the calyx lobes red; petals 5, persistent. Fruit about 2 cm wide, supported on much enlarged calyx, which forms a cup round the base, about 4 cm wide.
