Description: Herb, erect, woody, stout, 0.5 - 1.5 m tall. Leaves very variable especially in size, usually drying dark-brown or deep green above, greyish beneath; lamina 1 - 10 X 0.5 - 11 cm, orbocular in outline, cordate at base, shallowly lobed or cut , with uppermost being often ovate to oblong or even rhomboid, cuneate at base, serrate crenate or at times entire. Flowers pink or rose-purple, dark purple at base. Ripe fruit depressed-globose, covered by stiff, hooked spines up to c. 1.25 - 1.75 mm long.
